Opening Up a Kitchen for New Chapters
The kitchen is the heart of a home, but this one was anything but—the original kitchen was closed off and outdated, separated from the dining space and pressed against an unconditioned porch. The old layout limited storage, natural light, and efficient flow for a modern family kitchen.
With a baby on the way, the homeowners needed a design that opened the space, improved function, and was ready before their family grew.
Floorplanning for Space
To unlock the potential of this space, we removed interior walls and extended the layout into the former porch and an adjacent room. Eliminating the porch allowed us to add square footage where it mattered most, creating a larger and more flexible kitchen footprint.
The new plan balances function with flow, connecting the kitchen to the rest of the home and making it a natural hub for family life.
Defining the Space
The design centers on Ateliers Jacob Carini Walnut flat-panel Euro cabinets, which bring warmth and a sleek, modern aesthetic. Their clean lines provide structure without overwhelming the room, while the walnut finish adds depth and richness.
To complement the cabinetry, we installed MSI Iced White countertops with a crisp eased edge. The pairing strikes a balance between bold character and timeless simplicity, creating a backdrop that feels both polished and inviting.
Tearing Down Our Challenges
As with many older homes, years of piecemeal changes had left the structure with unusual framing. Removing walls required careful planning and technical expertise to ensure the kitchen was not only beautiful but also structurally sound.
