We spend a good portion of our daily lives in our home, particularly in the kitchen. The functionality and enjoyment of your kitchen can have a huge impact on the quality of your daily life. A disfunctional or unsightly kitchen is a common reason why people reach out to us for help. This is exactly why our clients here contacted Mint Construction. Their kitchen lacked both function, style and was also starting to show clear signs of wearing out. They wanted a space that felt comfortable, beautiful and fresh. Two big issues came out at our first meeting: they had limited storage space and the Corian countertops were stained and cracked after years of service. Our Mint team stepped in to turn their kitchen and entire main living area into the space they love to live in daily.

The Challenge & Solution: Bringing a Classic Kitchen into Present Day

The kitchen started out with dated maple cabinets, worn countertops and a layout that was less than ideal for the current family. The clients wanted a space that could handle family gatherings and daily life. But they also wanted the new finished to be more durable than the previous kitchen so that it would last them for decades. They further hoped for better flow between rooms and more pantry storage.

We began our design process by learning about the family’s lifestyle and talking with them to understand their preferences. This helped us make sure every detail had a purpose to fulfill. One important change was removing some interior walls to improve flow, which is a common request for many kitchen remodels. We also suggested adding a walk-in pantry with custom shelves to meet their storage needs, making daily life much easier.

The Transformation: Crafting an Inviting Space That’s Open But Cozy

The finished kitchen is elegant and sophisticated, thanks to carefully chosen materials and finishes. The big highlight is the decorative walnut island built from Mint Cabinetry. The kitchen is also set off with MSI Calacatta Valentin countertops, which have a beautiful white surface with soft gray and gold veins, giving the look of Italian marble but with the durability of man-made quartz. To keep the project on budget, the perimeter cabinets were from our KCD Cabinet line but elevated with decorative side panels and baseboard.

The house already featured 2 1/4” red oak flooring but was ready for refinishing. Our clients did care for the orange hue of the current floor, but we assured them we could keep the existing boards and refinish them with a more neutral stain color. This is a common complaint of red oak floors, which is actually the result of yellowed sealer from sunlight and not necessarily inherent in red oak itself.

The focal point of the main wall of the kitchen is the Hoodsly Angled Walnut hood above the range. The natural walnut color contrasts with the painted wall cabinets around it while providing the essential ventilation for a gas range. Every element of this kitchen was chosen for its look, quality and function.

We updated the kitchen and living room layout with new recessed lighting, giving a soft, pleasant glow and with great visibility. We always recommend light color around 2,700-3,000k which is comfortable and resembles sunlight. Lower numbers are often too amber and higher numbers are too blue or sterile.

The built in cabinetry of the living room was existing but the shelves did not extend to the ceiling, leaving a small area for dust to collect that was difficult to clean. We rebuilt the shelves to extend all the way to the ceiling and continued the crown molding in front of them for a better look. We also gave the cabinets a fresh coat of paint to make them look new again.

The Impact: A Better Daily Life and Higher Home Value

This remodel did more than just improve how the kitchen looks, it made a real difference in the family’s daily life. The open layout helps everyone stay connected and the pantry keeps things organized.

In the end, this remodel improved both the look and value of the home. This is the sweet spot of a remodel project, something that you can enjoy but also get future value back out of it. The new kitchen brings together function and style, creating a place where the family can make memories for years to come.

At Mint Construction, we know that every detail matters when turning a house into a home. This kitchen remodel shows our dedication to quality work and meeting our clients’ needs. We take pride in listening and coming up with new ideas. Our goal is to create designs that improve both homes and lives.
